Silverchair’s Platform Strategies meeting, an industry conference exploring the intersection of business strategy and technology, will be held in New York City on September 25 and 26.

In this series of blog posts, the Silverchair team will give you a preview of Platform Strategies’ program, a look behind the scenes at our planning and preparations, and share what we’re looking forward to. Platform Strategies 2019 has arrived with a great lineup of speakers and topics. After attending this amazing event last year, I immediately began to wonder what this year held in store. This year won’t disappoint with topics ranging AI and what it means for the future of scholarship as well as new and creative ways to monetize content, a salient discussion in the world of declining subscriptions and Plan S.

Ian Bremmer’s keynote presentation on sovereign internets and their effect on global publishing is of particular interest to me. With Russia’s latest push for a sovereign internet and China’s well-known firewall, the scholarly publishing industry faces challenges in getting content into major global regions. Censorship and the elimination of credible research in large global economies is something our industry will need to address. I expect excellent questions and discussions on this topic.

The theme of adding value across the industry when the aims of stakeholders may conflict will weave through many presentations. Strategies for both monetizing content and making research more open and accessible will be shared and examined. Sessions will also explore the value added by capturing and making discoverable larger swaths of the research life cycle and how artificial intelligence is applied to solve industry problems.

How do we move scholarly publishing forward together? Are these viable options for the future? Who are we leaving out? These are only some of the questions that will be answered by speakers including Ann Michael (PLOS), Daniel Hook (Digital Science), and Paul Gee (AMA).

Platform Strategies 2019 will cover these topics and so much more. Entry is free and we’d love to have you; register here. Hope to see you there!
