Silverchair works with some of the most prestigious names in scholarly and professional information, spanning the worlds of professional societies and associations, university presses, commercial publishing, and government agencies. These spotlights offer a chance to get to know our growing community better. Below, Michael Muscat, Publishing Manager at AACN, offers insight into their operations and our partnership.

What is your mission / vision?

The mission of the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN), publisher of AACN Advanced Critical Care, Critical Care Nurse, and American Journal of Critical Care, is as follows: “Patients and their families rely on nurses at the most vulnerable times of their lives. Acute and critical care nurses rely on AACN for expert knowledge and the influence to fulfill their promise to patients and their families. AACN drives excellence because nothing less is acceptable.”

What are your 2020-2021 goals?

Our goal is to keep publishing the latest, most timely, and most valuable peer-reviewed evidence and clinical content to meet the needs of readers, most of whom are beginning, intermediate, and advanced practice critical care nurses; researchers, educators, and nurse managers; and allied caregivers such as pharmacists and physical therapists who treat the sickest patients in progressive and critical care environments. As publishers, we seek to innovate as the field changes, maintaining our relevance while augmenting traditional print content with dynamic websites, incorporating traditional and multimedia forms of communication such as audio and video. Growing our reach and revenue through increased individual and institutional subscriptions is another goal.

Why did you select Silverchair as your platform?

We felt that Silverchair was the best match for AACN culturally and that its balanced approach, focusing on the user experience as well as technological innovation, would help propel AACN's journal websites into the future in accordance with the organization's strategic plans. Silverchair offered support and architecture for realizing short- and long-term vision including SSO, content curation, and augmentation of traditional scholarly content with multimedia resources.

What is your favorite Silverchair feature and why?

We particularly like the split-screen view on the article level, enabling side-by-side comparisons of text and references for a smoother, easier reading experience. Advanced search across all our titles is also a nice feature.
